Tattersalls

bringing a heritage brand into a new era

Web Design

01. OVERVIEW

a modern platform for a historic institution

Since 1766, Tattersalls has been a cornerstone of the global equine industry. As Europe’s leading auctioneer and the world’s oldest, the business operates across Newmarket, Cheltenham, Ireland and Online, hosting some of the most prestigious equine sales in the calendar.  But while the business has continued to evolve, their website hadn’t kept pace. With over a decade since the last update, Tattersalls approached Orangery to bring their digital presence in line with the premium, global brand they represent.

Working together, we reimagined the online experience from the ground up — modernising the design, streamlining the infrastructure and creating a multisite CMS that unites all four locations under one cohesive system. The result is a contemporary, flexible platform that honours Tattersalls’ rich legacy while supporting its future growth.

02. challenge

building the foundations

Redesigning a platform with this much history behind it called for a measured and strategic approach. We began by engaging with key stakeholders across the business to build a clear picture of current workflows, content needs and user expectations.

Through a comprehensive audit of the tech stack, UX and visual design, we uncovered where the site was falling short – from ageing frameworks to fragmented branding and a content system that wasn’t working hard enough.

These insights formed the basis of a strategic roadmap to improve usability, unify the experience and hand more control back to the in-house team.

03. solution

a design system grounded in clarity

Our design approach balances prestige with practicality. We introduced a consistent visual language across all four platforms, while giving each site a tailored identity through colour palette and accents.

From catalogue listings to entry information, we restructured key pages around intuitive user journeys, with clearer navigation and purposeful layouts that reflect how people search, browse and buy. What emerged was a system that feels modern but not overworked; one that is confident, legible and perfectly in step with the stature of the Tattersalls brand.

development made intuItive

When a website underpins something as time-sensitive and high-profile as a live auction, the backend matters just as much as the design. So we built a robust WordPress multisite that allows Tattersalls to manage all four locations from a single, central CMS. Content updates are now simple and scalable, which is a major step forward from the legacy system that required developer input at every turn.

We made the transition as seamless as possible, developing a custom importer to carry legacy content into the new platform and handled integration with Tattersalls’ external sales system. Hosting was fine-tuned for speed and reliability, and we delivered tailored guides and walkthroughs to support the team’s day-to-day. During key live sales, we were right there with them, providing live support to keep things running smoothly.

04. result

designed for growth

The new Tattersalls platform honours its legacy with a premium, cohesive and consistent experience. From the outset, we engaged with people across the business to understand how it truly operates – its pressures, its pace and the needs of its audience. That early groundwork shaped every decision that followed, from the design system to the backend architecture.

The result is a modern platform that reflects the stature of the Tattersalls brand, supports the team behind it and offers the flexibility to grow with the business in the years ahead.
